We Welcome all
Our worship is best described as a traditional, comfortable and welcoming. The elements of worship include the reading of scripture, singing of hymns, a sermon, prayers and special music.
One of our favorite moments in the service is the passing of the peace when congregants are invited to share an air hug, peace sign, or a fist bump with one another while we are in the midst of COVID. Though the Chancel Choir leads most of the music, it is not uncommon for our Sunday worship to include horns, brass, harp, violin, bells, bagpipes or guitar. We encourage all ages to help lead in worship, especially our young people.
Most Sundays one of our youth leads in the call to worship and first scripture reading. We also have elementary aged acolytes, junior ushers, children’s choir and youth bells. A moment for children to come forward and learn from one of our pastors is also a piece of our worship.
Here at First Presbyterian, we believe worship to be a corporate experience shared by all. God is our audience. The doors to our sanctuary are open to everyone and anyone who is looking for grace, acceptance, love and a place to belong. Built in 1907, our sanctuary is one of the oldest in Sumter.
If you are searching for a church home, we invite you to join us for a Sunday at 10:30 am.
What to wear?
Many of our congregants choose to dress up for Church. Some wear suits or dresses while others have open collars and no tie, or polo shirts and kakis. So, wear what feels comfortable.
